Founded in 2016 by Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo through Y Combinator, Scale AI started as a data labeling API for autonomous vehicles and expanded into a full AI data platform. Today Scale provides high-quality training data, RLHF pipelines, red-teaming, and model evaluation for frontier AI labs and enterprises. Customers have included OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, the U.S. Department of Defense, and General Motors. Scale differentiates on quality-controlled human labeling combined with model-assisted automation, and on its growing government and defense practice. In 2025, Meta made a $14.3B investment for a 49% stake, valuing Scale at $29B, and Alexandr Wang joined Meta as Chief AI Officer.
